A Game Where You Never Loseon December 30, 2011 at 12:24 pm
We here at Lace Up Your Balls typically focus on sports related posts, but we’re actually fans of any kind of game. So when we got the chance to try out a new auction site, we jumped on the opportunity to try something new. The site is YouNeverLose.com, and it’s a penny auction site where you can win gift cards to places like Amazon, Starbucks, and Apple at up to 95% off. You may not think of an auction site as a game, but if you think about what you’re doing, it kind of is.
The premise of a penny auction is that you buy bids to use in the auction, usually in bundles of 25, 50, or 100. Each time a bid is placed, the cost of the item increases 1 penny and a little time (typically 20 seconds or so) gets added to a countdown clock. When the countdown ends, the person who made the last bid gets to buy the item for the current price (again, it’s usually pretty cheap since each bid only raises the price 1 penny). This process makes it a game because you’re competing against both other people and time. If there are only 2 seconds left and you’re not the highest bidder, you best get your bid in or else you’re going to lose.
You Never Lose takes this same approach, but with one key difference. On other sites, you buy bids with the hope of using them to win. If you use them and don’t win, you have nothing to show for it. On You Never Lose, they automatically send you a gift card that is equal value to the amount of bids you bought. So if you buy $25 worth of bids to use in auctions, you’ll receive a $25 gift card. You even get to choose the gift card from options like Banana Republic, Kmart, Old Navy, Restaurants.com, and more.
If you’re still confused, this video does a great job explaining how they work.
If you’ve never tried a penny auction site before, this would be a great one to start on. When you buy bids, choose a gift card to a store you know you’re going to shop at. By doing this, there’s literally no risk in playing, but huge rewards if you win.
If you give it a try, be sure to let us know in the comments what you think!
